Bihar is one of the poorer states of India with per capita income of less than $800. Bihar’s contribution to art, education and culture is unmatched. Bihar is the one most intimately linked to the Buddha’s life and has many important places for Hindus, Sikhs and Jains. Biharis specially like to pay especial emphasis on education, but due several reasons the education system of the state has suffered, leading to student migrating to other states.
Shri Samaj Sudharak Pustkalay (SSSP Library) is located in Rewasi Pakri Village under Sitamarhi district in Bihar about 130 Kilometers from the state capital Patna. The library laid in ruins since 1970s, unknown even to local residents. The need to create a community space for positive interactions and learning was obvious. A small but a growing population of educated professional who recently retired and moved back to their ancestral village decided to take the matter in hands. Soon it became a mission of the villagers to revive the library. Everyone contributed, the building was rebuilt in few months, donations poured in and now the library has a decent 500 square foot hall equipped with few computes and donated books.
Library was formally inaugurated on 4th October 2022 by Speaker of Vidhan Parishad, Shri Devesh Chand Thakur. In short period of time, with a very limited resources the library has become a vibrant place, students come to try their hands at computers, read newspapers and books. SSSP Library is also helping students prepare for competitive examinations by paying the fee for online coaching classes, where students come to library in groups and attend classes.
There is a lot that needs to be done, there is a need for lot many books, a lot more infrastructure and a lot more commitment.
